How to care for bamboo screening and double its service life
Bamboo is one of the most sustainable and hard-wearing materials there is, but because it is natural, sun and damp are its greatest enemies. With just three key steps you can double the life of your screening and avoid having to replace it after barely two years.
1. Enemy number one: rising damp
The most common mistake is letting the bamboo canes sit directly on damp ground or soil. Bamboo draws water up through the base, and that rots the fibre from the inside even when the outside still looks intact.
Professional tip: always fit the screening with a gap of at least 2-3 cm above the ground, or mount it on an aluminium profile. That creates an air gap that keeps the base dry and prevents rot.
2. Protection against UV
Like skin, bamboo “burns” in the sun: over time it turns grey and brittle. Protecting it in good time makes all the difference.
What to apply: avoid synthetic varnishes, as they form a rigid film that ends up flaking. The best options are natural oils with UV protection or open-pore wood stains: they penetrate the fibre and let the bamboo breathe while keeping its natural colour.
3. Annual cleaning
Once a year, ideally at the end of winter, it is worth removing the dust and any mould spores that have built up.
How to do it: use water with neutral soap and a soft-bristled brush. Avoid pressure washers at full power, as they can splinter the surface of the cane and weaken its structure.
