Natural timber, WPC or PVC: which to choose for your outdoor space
It is the question we get asked most: natural timber, composite or PVC? The honest answer is that there is no “best” material, only the one that suits each project. We work with all three, so our aim is not to defend one of them but to help you choose according to your budget, the use it will get and the maintenance you are willing to take on. Here are the technical differences between them.
1. What each material is
- Natural timber (ipe, iroko, oak): an organic, renewable material and, in the case of tropical hardwoods, extremely dense and hard-wearing.
- WPC (composite): also known as “engineered timber”. A hybrid that combines wood fibre with polymers, aiming for the best of both worlds: the look of timber with technical performance.
- PVC: a synthetic material, light and very easy to handle, with no organic content.
2. Durability and maintenance
Each material approaches durability differently, and none of them is wrong; they simply answer different priorities.
- Natural timber: its great strength is that it can be restored. If it gets scratched or loses colour over the years, you sand it, oil it and it looks new again. In return, it asks for annual maintenance (a coat of oil) to keep its tone.
- WPC and PVC: their great strength is precisely the opposite. No oiling or treatments needed: soap, water and done. They cope very well with damp and UV. If you want to forget about maintenance, they are the comfortable option.
In short: timber is maintained and renewed; synthetics are forgotten about. Choose according to how much time you want to give it.
3. Thermal comfort: the “barefoot” factor
Something to bear in mind if you plan to enjoy your terrace in high summer. Natural timber, thanks to its organic pore, regulates temperature and stays cooler in the sun. Synthetic materials tend to build up more heat, especially in dark tones; if you go for composite or PVC in a very sunny area used barefoot (such as a poolside), choose light tones with a textured finish, which reduce this effect considerably.

- Choose PVC if you need an economical, lightweight solution for a low-traffic area, easy to fit and with minimal upkeep.
