Which post do you need for the job?

A post that goes into the ground does not work like one holding up a pergola under cover. The difference is the treatment: posts in permanent ground contact need use class 4, which guarantees protection against fungi and insects in constantly damp conditions. For raised or sheltered structures a lower class is enough.

Treated pine, eucalyptus and aluminium

Pressure-treated pine is the standard for fencing and enclosures: mineral salts injected under pressure, the characteristic greenish finish and a price-to-durability ratio that is hard to beat. Eucalyptus offers greater natural density and a more rustic look, common in agricultural fencing and land boundaries. Aluminium posts are the answer when the fence uses panels and you want no maintenance at all: they do not rot, do not warp and need no periodic treatment.

Formats and installation

We stock pointed round posts, square posts and pine boards for the infill. As a rule of thumb, a post should be buried to about a third of its total length: for a fence 1.5 m high you need a post of around 2.2 m.

You can concrete the post in directly or use a metal anchor bolted to a slab. The anchor adds to the cost but keeps the timber out of direct contact with ground moisture and extends its life considerably.
