What a railway sleeper is used for

The sleeper is a solid, heavy-section piece that solves things in the garden other timbers cannot: low retaining walls, outdoor steps, bed edging, seating and rustic structures. Its weight is precisely what makes it stable without complex anchoring.

Reclaimed, natural oak or treated pine

Reclaimed railway sleepers have a weathered look that no new piece reproduces, with marks of use and dark tones. It is always worth checking what treatment they carry, as old railway sleepers may have been treated with products whose use in domestic settings is regulated.

Natural oak sleepers offer the same solid character without chemical treatment, with the hardness of the species and a very handsome grey weathering outdoors.

Eco-friendly treated pine sleepers are the option designed specifically for domestic gardens: sleeper section and appearance, pressure treatment suitable for ground contact and a far more manageable weight.

Installation

For retaining walls, partially bury the first course and tie the sleepers together with threaded rod or metal brackets. On steps, always secure the piece against sliding even if its own weight seems enough.

Bear the weight in mind before ordering: these are pieces rarely handled alone.
