Tropical hardwood, bamboo or composite

An outdoor deck takes direct sun, rain and constant temperature swings. The choice of material therefore matters far more than indoors: it determines the maintenance you face over the next fifteen years.

The options and how they differ

Ipé is the densest and most stable timber in our range, practically unbeatable for durability and the benchmark for high-traffic terraces. Iroko offers a warmer golden tone at a more moderate price, with very good weathering behaviour. Teak brings natural oils that protect it and an elegant way of ageing. Bamboo is the sustainable alternative, with surprising hardness. WPC composite removes maintenance entirely: no oil, no splinters, no colour change.

Face-fixed or hidden fastening

Face fixing screws the board from the top: quicker, cheaper, with the screws visible. Hidden fastening, using metal clips or the CAMO system, leaves the surface completely clean and is what makes the visual difference on a terrace.

Either way you need joists and a gap of 4 to 6 mm between boards for drainage and timber movement.

Maintenance

Left untreated, all tropical hardwood turns a silvery grey that many people like. If you prefer to keep the original tone, apply a specific oil once or twice a year.
