OSB-3 or three-ply: which to use

Both are large-format structural panels, but they answer different needs and confusing them is expensive.

OSB-3 pine panel

OSB-3 is made of oriented strands pressed with moisture-resistant resins. Under the European standard, the 3 designation covers structural use in humid conditions: this is the panel for walls, roofs, mezzanine floors, dry lining and floor decks. It carries load well and takes screws directly, though its face has a very distinctive look that you either embrace or cover.

Three-ply spruce panel

Three-ply is made of three layers of solid timber bonded with the grain crossed, giving it excellent dimensional stability and a far cleaner visible face. It is the usual panel for reusable formwork, workbenches, shelving and furniture where the timber stays exposed without veneering.

Format and handling

Both come in 1250x2500 mm, a format that optimises cutting but is heavy and awkward to move alone. If you are handling several panels, a panel carrier saves a great deal of effort and stops you knocking the edges.

Always store them flat and on bearers: stood upright against a wall they end up bowing.
