To make a good decision, we must first understand what each material is made of. Not everything that looks like plastic is the same:

  • Natural Wood (Ipe, Iroko, Oak): 100% organic, renewable material, and extremely dense in the case of tropical woods.
  • WPC (Wood Plastic Composite): Also called "technological wood." It is a hybrid that mixes wood fibers (sawdust) with plastic polymers.
  • PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): 100% synthetic material, a pure plastic with no organic components.

2. Real Durability and Repairability

This is where natural wood has no competition. In our experience, we have seen how time affects each one:

  • The advantage of wood: If an Ipe board gets scratched, stained, or loses color after years in the sun, the solution is simple: sanding and oiling. The wood looks new again. It is the only material of the three that allows for complete restoration.
  • The Achilles' heel of synthetics (WPC/PVC): As seen in the main image, composite undergoes irreversible degradation. The sun can crack the fibers, and the plastic becomes brittle. If a PVC slat gets scratched or burned, you cannot sand it; you have to replace it, and the color of the new piece will never match the rest of the worn terrace.

If you plan to enjoy your terrace in summer, this technical detail is vital. Synthetic materials (especially PVC) are very efficient heat conductors:

  1. Synthetics: Can reach temperatures that make it impossible to walk barefoot, accumulating heat for hours.
